10 Celebrities That Like to Get High

Today, smoking marijuana is less of a potential jail sentence and more of a social status brag.  We all know the celebrities that are prominent lovers of marijuana like Snoop Dog, Seth Rogen, Willi Nelson, and Miley Cyrus. But did you know there are quite a few celebrities who are quieter about enjoying a good joint once in a while?

Furthermore, some of our more popular Presidents have enjoyed a few “mary janes” themselves.

Celebrities That Admit to Getting High

Grab a snack, light up what you got, and come check out this list of celebrities that like to get high.

1. David Letterman

“I went through one period when I smoked a surprising, a really breath-taking, amount of grass almost every night. One night I smoked down a big joint and then went downstairs and ate two pints of Haagen-Dazs ice cream and then went back to bed. An hour later I woke up and thought my heart had stopped. And the next day I went to a cardiologist and he said ‘Well, no, it didn’t stop. Everything’s fine.’ And that was the end of my pot experiences.”

2. Anne Hathaway

Anne Hathaway is an actress best known for her roles in The Princess Diaries and The Devil Wears Prada.  While on the talk show, Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, Hathaway talked about her smoking habits while playing the game “Plead the Fifth”. 4. Kris Jenner

Kris Jenner is an American socialite, producer, businesswoman, and most notably the “Momager” to the Kardashian/Jenner clan. While celebrating her daughter, Kim’s, birthday, Kris goes on video while smoking a joint to give her daughter a loving message.

While some fans of the show might have found that shocking it’s not the first time Kris has been seen on video or in a photo with a joint. In 2014 on an episode of Keep Up With The Kardashian, Kris and her mother MJ decide to get high and when Bruce finds them, she says,

“We thought it would be a good idea for MJ to try out some MJ…I don’t know how to stop laughing!”

5. Louis Armstrong

Louise Armstrong whose nickname was Satchmo was one of the most influential and famous jazz singers and performers of all time. Armstrong was a long-time smoker of marijuana starting back in the 1920s and throughout his career. He even had a nickname for his pot, “the gage”.

Long before J.K Rowling introduced us to what muggles mean in the wizarding world, muggles or mugs was a term used by jazz musicians when referring to cannabis. It is said that the jazz instrumental performed by Armstrong titled “Muggles” is about his love for marijuana.

“It really puzzles me to see marijuana connected with narcotics dope and all of that stuff. It is a thousand times better than whiskey. It is an assistant and a friend… We always looked at pot as a sort of medicine, a cheap drunk and with much better thoughts than one that’s full of liquor ”

6. Charlize Theron

Charlize Theron is a South African and American actor and producer most known for her role in Monster and Mad Max: Fury Road. Charlize has been quoted saying, “I was a wake-and-baker most of my life.” And “I was older [when I first tried it]. I did not really mess around with anything until I was much older. But I really appreciated marijuana way more than alcohol or anything else.” While on Jimmy Kimmel Live in 2018 she confessed to being a regular smoker for 8 years but stopped when she:

“found myself frozen starring at my open fridge for 8 hours.”

7. Jake Owen

Jake Owen is an American country music singer, songwriter, and actor. His most popular songs are Along With You, Barefoot Blue Jean Night, and Beachin. In a 2014 candid interview with Rolling Stones, he shared that while he’s sick of being seen as the “Beachin” guy or a beach bum country singer he admits,

“I have done my share of weed.”

8. Oprah Winfrey

While most noted for being a world-renowned talk show host on the hit, The Oprah Winfrey Show, she is also a television producer, actress, author, and philanthropist. While she doesn’t admit to smoking pot now she has on an episode of What Happens: Live that,

“The last time I smoked weed was 1982 …. I hear it’s gotten better.”

9. Matthew McConaughey

Matthey McConaughey is an actor, producer, and actual professor of practice with the Moody College of Communication at the University of Texas. While that may seem like a lot already, he is now considered a possible stint in politics as a potential candidate for Governor of Texas.

While McConaughey has never publicly confirmed or denied smoking weed he was arrested once back in 1999 for possession of marijuana. A neighbor called in a noise complaint and the police caught him playing his bongo…. naked. When asked about the arrest years later he says,

“What’s wrong with beating on your drums in your birthday suit? I have no regrets about the way I got there.”

10. Steve Martin

Steve Martin is an actor, comedian, writer, producer, and musician. His most notable films are The Jerk and Father of the Bride. While he used to smoke in his early years, he stated he was a “cowardly drug taker” and would stay away from hard drugs because he was prone to panic attacks like the one he first experienced while going to see the movie The Producers back 1967.

“I used to smoke marijuana. But I’ll tell you something: I would only smoke it in the late evening. Oh, occasionally the early evening, but usually the late evening – or the mid-evening. Just the early evening, mid-evening, and late evening. Occasionally, early afternoon, early midafternoon, or perhaps the late-mid-afternoon. Oh, sometimes the early-mid-late-early morning… But never at dusk.”

Bonus: U.S. Presidents that Got High

If that is not surprising enough, we have former US Presidents who’ve sparked it up a time or two. Most notably:

Thomas Jefferson

“Some of my finest hours have been spent on my back veranda, smoking hemp and observing as far as my eye can see.”

Bill Clinton

“I tried marijuana once. I DID. NOT. INHALE.”

Barack Obama

“When I was a kid, I inhaled frequently. That was the point.”

And on that note, I think it is safe to say, marijuana is one magical plant that can ease aches and pains, spark untold creativity, and freak some people out. Though it has yet to become legal on the federal level, an increasing number of states legalizing it and the abundance of medical marijuana products prove that it is here to stay.
