CBD Skincare: Is it Effective for Sensitive Skin?

CBD skincare is taking the market by storm and getting bigger with each passing day.

Skincare companies are hailing its benefits for fighting acne to reversing the look of aging skin.

The global CBD skincare market is expected to hit $1.7 billion by 2025 and is currently valued at $580 million.

You can go to pretty much any store in person or online and find CBD masks, serums, chapsticks, creams, sunscreen, cleansers, and bath bombs just to name a few.

Before we dive into all the different types of products available and if they are safe for sensitive skin, let’s briefly go over what CBD oil is.

What is CBD?

Cannabidiol, also known as CBD, is derived from the hemp plant which is a cousin of the marijuana plant. While CBD is a component of marijuana, by itself it does not cause a high because it does not activate the same regions in the brain as THC.

How Does CBD Work?

CBD works by interacting with our body’s endocannabinoid system which is a regulatory system made up of naturally occurring cannabis-like molecules. These endocannabinoids work like neurotransmitters, sending messages through the body to help maintain homeostasis. CBD interacts with these receptors, triggering positive effects.

Is CBD a Good Ingredient in Skincare?

CBD has been found to be a great anti-inflammatory. Because of its anti-inflammatory properties, CBD can potentially be helpful in treating skin conditions like inflammation, dryness, and acne.

CBD has also shown potential in regulating oil production and neutralizing free radical damage to the skin making it a potentially effective ingredient to help with eczema and psoriasis.

Benefits of CBD Skincare

Acne

Acne is often caused by inflammation and clogged pores. CBD has been shown to reduce inflammation and regulate oil production making it less likely your pores will clog. CBD can also help with the pain of swollen acne.

Wrinkles

CBD has been found to have antioxidant properties and these antioxidants help decrease the signs of again in the form of wrinkles or skin dullness.

Eczema

Eczema is a chronic skin condition that causes irritation and inflammation. CBD helps to calm inflammation and soothe irritated skin. It also helps to neutralize free radical damage which makes it ideal to use against eczema, psoriasis, and dermatitis

Dull Skin

CBD has immense moisturizing properties which lend it to treat dehydration and dryness of the skin which can lead to dull aged-looking skin.

CBD Skincare products come in a wide range of types, like:

  • Creams
  • Lotions
  • Oils
  • Serums

The application can differ as well.

CBD oils and serums usually come with a dropper applicator built into the lid that you use to drop a small amount of oil in your palm to then rub into the skin or you can add it to a lotion you already use.

Some lotions and creams come in a tub, tube, or pump but there are some that come in a rollerball that you can target exactly where you want it with a minimal mess on your hands.

What Types of CBD Products are Best for Sensitive Skin?

CBD Oil has been found to have a lot of soothing properties which helps to minimize issues related to skin sensitivity like redness and reactivity.

If you find you have a reaction after using a CBD product it’s most likely due to another ingredient mixed with it.

Make sure to choose products that contain ingredients that work well with CBD like additives that calm and nourish the skin barrier (Ex: ceramides, hyaluronic acid, peptides and niacinamides.)

Try to steer clear of any products that contain alcohol in them as that ingredient can heighten inflammatory skin conditions.

Look for products that list cannabidiol as the ingredient and not hemp seed oil or extract. You also want to look to see if the brand lists the total cannabidiol content in milligrams because that means you will know exactly how much CBD is in your product.

Forms of CBD Available

Currently, CBD is available in three forms:

Full-Spectrum CBD

Full-spectrum CBD retains all the different components of the cannabis plant and usually has a small amount of THC that is less than 0.3%.

Broad-Spectrum CBD

Broad-spectrum CBD retains all the different components of the cannabis plant like full-spectrum CBD oil does, but it does not contain any THC.

CBD Isolate

CBD isolate is the purest form of CBD. It contains only CBD and no other compounds from the cannabis plant.

CBD products are still widely unregulated. You should be very picky in which products you purchase and make sure what is said on the label is what is in the product.

Third-party certification that verifies the purity and amount of CBD the product contains is the gold standard for CBD products and can give you peace of mind that your product contains pure ingredients.

While CBD is legal in most states thanks to the 2018 Farm Bill, there are a few states that still list it as illegal. Those states are:

  • Idaho
  • Nebraska
  • South Dakota (Unclear)

Remember, before using anything that could potentially affect your health, talk with your doctor first, or in this case, your dermatologist.
